Beginning Monday, The Career Center will be offering all workshops remotely via zoom for the remainder of the month. Zoom is an online video conferencing system that we will be using for our classes. You will need a computer with internet connectivity to participate (a headset or earphones with microphone are recommended, though not required).

We ask that you check the workshop calendar, and register for all workshops you’re interested in taking via EventBrite prior to attending. Registering for workshops will ensure the facilitator has your contact information to provide you with any instructions you’ll need regarding virtual workshop participation.

The Actors Fund offers a calendar of workshops to support the needs of all who work in entertainment and the performing arts.

The Actor’s Fund provides a searchable list of online resources. This resources section is an ongoing collaborative effort to provide a one-stop database of services and organizations that meet the unique and essential needs of the arts and entertainment professional.

Actors Fund Career Center

The Actors Fund Career Center offers a comprehensive suite of programs and services that help entertainment industry and performing arts professionals identify and find side work and discover new careers outside the industry.

Working professionals often need additional career opportunities to support the continuing pursuit of industry work. Through The Career Center, you can develop rewarding sideline careers like:

• teaching

• healing professions

The Career Center is not an employment agency. They will not find you a job, but Career Center counselors, employment specialists and teaching staff will help you:

• Identify and apply your skills to other work settings
• Provide a resource for referral to employers in the larger community
• Provide one-on-one career counseling, seminars, workshops and panel discussions
• Create a top-notch resume package
• Master new technology
• Land interviews that can lead you to supplementary income

There is also some tuition assistance available for eligible clients who are seeking occupational short-term training or for those who are returning to school for a degree in order to change careers.

Orientation is the first step to enrolling in the services of The Career Center.

The Career Center addresses a central challenge for performing arts and entertainment professionals: navigating the episodic nature of work in the industry. For many, survival work—initiated to make ends meet—ends up draining the creative professional and becoming more of a problem than a solution.

This orientation will help you begin to take the necessary steps to identify meaningful work that complements your life in the entertainment business.

Orientation for The Career Center (NYC) is held every Monday, except national holidays, at 12 noon and some Monday evenings at 5 pm.

A member in good standing of any entertainment industry union, and others who have earned $6,500 in each of three of the last five years, or $5,000 in each of five of the last 10 years. For those who do not have earnings, 12 weeks of documented industry work can be substituted.

Hart Fund
The Blues Foundation established the HART Fund (Handy Artists Relief Trust) for Blues musicians and their families in financial need due to a broad range of health concerns. The Fund provides for acute, chronic and preventive medical and dental care as well as funeral and burial expenses. Throughout the year at various events the HART Fund provides free health screenings for musicians, with services including but not limited to checking blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, prostate cancer, Hep C, anemia, thyroid, kidney and liver testing via blood work.

Requests for funding should be made by contacting The Blues Foundation directly. Upon contacting the foundation, you will be asked to complete a short application form. A committee will then review your application to ensure that the individual qualifies and the request is for health-related financial needs.

Sweet Relief Musicians Fund provides financial assistance to all types of career musicians who are struggling to make ends meet while facing illness, disability, or age-related problems.

Sweet Relief helps musicians with medical and living expenses including insurance premiums, prescriptions, medical treatment and operative procedures, housing costs, food costs, utilities and other basic necessities.

Grants typically range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars per qualifying individual.

Membership in Local 802 affords you a number of concrete benefits, intended to make your life as a working musician a little easier.

Health Care

Local 802 Musicians Health Fund: Every time you work a union gig, your employer contributes to the Local 802 Musicians Health Fund on your behalf. If a certain amount of contributions are made on your behalf during a six-month Contribution Period, you will be eligible for health coverage during the corresponding six-month Coverage Period.

AFM Pension Fund

AFM Pension Fund: Every time you work a union gig, your employer contributes to the American Federation of Musicians and Employers’ Pension Fund on your behalf. The Fund allows musicians to accumulate individual pension credits throughout their careers and secure a financially sustainable retirement.

Rehearsal Space Rental

Musicians’ Assistance Program

Musicians’ Assistance Program: All Local 802 members and their families are eligible for MAP, a free and confidential program administered and professionally staffed by The Actors Fund. The program’s services include counseling, referrals, and resources for anything ranging from personal, family, and work issues and substance abuse to childcare, elder care, financial assistance, legal services, and work/life seminars on topics like financial management and healthcare.

Emergency Relief Fund

Emergency Relief Fund: After two years of union membership, all active Local 802 members are eligible for help from the Musicians’ Emergency Relief Fund if they’re experiencing extreme financial hardship. The ERF can connect you to appropriate services through MAP or help you pay off an expense, such as gas, electric, or telephone cut-off, eviction, medical debts, costs incurred due to the theft of instruments, auto repairs, etc.

Actors Federal Credit Union

Actors Federal Credit Union: You’re eligible to join the Actors Federal Credit Union as an 802 member. An AFCU branch is located on the 4th floor of Local 802. AFCU is owned and run by its members, meaning any net income earned is returned to members in the form of dividends on deposits or discounted loan pricing, including affordable instrument loans.

Instrument Insurance

AFM Log-In: There are a number of insurance policies Local 802 members can access through the AFM. The instrument insurance policy allows coverage for your equipment for theft or when it’s off premises or in transit. Unclaimed Checks Pick-Up

Unclaimed Checks Pick-Up: Local 802 collects checks for our members from the Sound Recording Special Payments Fund, the Film Musicians Secondary Market Fund, the AFM & SAG-AFTRA Fund, SoundExchange, AARC, and the escrow fund of New York State. Pick up your checks from the Electronic Media Checks Window on the 2nd floor of Local 802 from 10AM-4:30PM on all weekdays except for Wednesday, when the window is open until 5:30PM.

Lester Petrillo Memorial Fund for Disabled Musicians: The Memorial Fund is a charitable trust fund that provides financial aid to disabled AFM members on an emergency basis. Anne Walker Scholarship Fund

Anne Walker Scholarship Fund: Each year, Anne Walker Scholarships are awarded to members of Local 802 and their children who are pursuing the study of music at an institution of higher learning. The deadline to apply each year is typically in early May.

Music Performance Trust Fund

Music Performance Trust Fund: Funding is available for musical performances meeting certain guidelines set by the Recording Industries Music Performance Fund. A co-sponsor is required. Contact MPTF administrator Marisa Friedman for more information.

Free Pilates Classes: Through our partnership with The Actors Fund, Local 802 members can sign up for free Pilates classes for musicians, aimed toward improving your endurance, helping you stop masking performance pain, and more. ERF – The Local 802 Musicians’ Emergency Relief Fund

The Musicians’ Emergency Relief Fund, provides Local 802’s 6,000+ professional musician members with reliable assistance in times of dire need. Assistance is available for crisis due to catastrophic illness, loss of work and financial hardship.

The Local 802 Musicians’ Emergency Relief Fund is a non-profit 501(c)(3), with the mission to provide Local 802’s professional musician members with reliable assistance in times of trouble and dire need.

Application Instructions

ERF is a non-profit charitable organization that provides financial assistance and support services to musicians in need, and is run through the Local 802 Musicians Assistance Program administered by the Actor’s Fund. ERF assistance is provided in the form of a direct grant to the musician’s service provider. For example, the funds are sent directly to physicians, landlords, and counselors.

To be eligible, you must:

• Posses a minimum of two years’ membership in the union;
• Be a member in Good Standing, with all dues (annual and work dues) paid.
• Fall within the guidelines defining “dire need” as set by the fund’s trustees.
• Covered expenses include gas, electric or telephone cut-off, eviction, medical debts, costs incurred due to the theft of instruments, auto repairs vital to continued employment, and other emergencies.
• An application for assistance requires proof of need, and must be filed through the Musicians Assistance Program (MAP).

MAP – Musician Assistance Program

The Musician Assistance Program (MAP) provides a wide range of services, including:

• Professional consultation and referral for personal, career and relationship problems
• Crisis intervention and short-term counseling
• Early identification, referral and comprehensive follow-up for alcohol and/or drug dependence
• Advocacy on behalf of members for emergency financial assistance through Local 802’s Emergency Relief Fund (as well as other foundations committed to helping musicians in financial need), legal aid and public entitlements (such as Social Security, disability insurance and public assistance)

Jazz in the Afternoon

“Jazz in the Afternoon” is a vibrant, informal series for popular jazz club musicians and Broadway players to perform for free. There is no charge for admission, but donations of any amount are accepted to benefit the NYC Musician’s Emergency Relief Fund of American Federation of Musicians Local 802, which helps musicians in times of crisis.

Donations can be made in cash or by check or credit card.

The Musicians’ ERF needs the sustaining support of music lovers and patrons of the arts to ensure that no deserving member goes without aid in times of crisis. Your tax-deductible contribution will ensure that the music will play on! Donate Now 

The Local 802 Musicians’ Assistance Program (MAP) runs under the auspices of the Actors Fund of America to help serve the members of Local 802 and their families. MAP is committed to the goal of helping musicians, a largely uninsured population, get appropriate free or low-cost treatment for drug and alcohol problems as well as for personal, relational and work-related problems

Local 802 Emergency Response & Reporting Procedure

802 Emergency Response & Reporting: Local 802 provides a communication platform that includes a phone hotline, mobile app, and web app to report any incidents of sexual harassment, bullying, or discrimination. All three reporting options operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

These new procedures allow musicians to safely, comfortably, and effectively report and address sexual harassment, bullying, and discrimination in the workplace anonymously – promoting confidentiality and safeguards against retaliation.

What is the Role of the Employer?

• To immediately provide anti-discrimination and harassment policy
• To make the policy readily available throughout your employment
• To follow the policy on harassment when complaints are made
• To investigate harassment and discrimination claims

What is the Role of Local 802?

✓ Demand that employers provide a safe workplace for Local 802 members
✓ Help members access their employer’s harassment policy
✓ Take action if employers fail to conduct full and fair investigations
✓ Help members navigate their options
✓ Help members navigate the reporting and investigative processes
✓ Protect members from potential retaliation or reprisals
✓ Help keep the employer accountable

Local 802 CANNOT:

X Intervene in situations where a member doesn’t want us to be involved
X Take action to implement a specific remedy

Ways to Report

With each reporting option, members have the option to report anonymously. However, by providing their name, the union can respond directly to the individual and provide concentrated support and resources.

1. Telephone Hotline (24/7)
a. Make a report through Local 802’s hotline at (646) 971-0604
b. When connected with intake personnel, state that you are an “802 member”
c. Provide information to trained WeTip report intake personnel.
d. The hotline number can also be accessed via the mobile app and web app under the “Get Help” resource heading

2. Mobile Device (24/7)
a. With the STOPit mobile app, you can report incidents to Local 802, which may include text and photos or video.
b. You can also use STOPit Messenger, which provides for two-way anonymous communication between you and Local 802. With STOPit Messenger, Local 802 can respond to your report to ask questions, and you are able to provide more information, while remaining completely anonymous.
c. Download STOPit for free through the App Store or Google Play.
d. Begin a report by entering the access code “802member” when prompted (code is not case-sensitive)

3. Online Web App (24/7)
a. Go to the STOPit reporting website at https://appweb.stopitsolutions.com/login
b. Begin a report by entering the access code “802member” when prompted (code is not case-sensitive)
c. Use the “Report” heading to submit an incident

After a report is made using the hotline or either of the STOPit apps, a notice will be sent to Local 802’s trained harassment reporting liaison. The liaison will acknowledge receipt of the report within 1-2 business days and work with the appropriate business representative(s) to take action.

A copy of Local 802’s Sexual Harassment, Bullying, Discrimination, and Emergency Response and Reporting Procedure is available for reference on the Member Docs page of the online member portal.

802 MAP – ERF’s Musician Assistance Program

Through the ERF, hundreds of musicians a year are helped by New York State licensed social workers who provide confidential social services and monetary grants to qualifying members and their families through the ERF’s Musicians’ Assistance Program (MAP) under the auspices of The Actors Fund.

The Musicians’ Assistance Program (MAP) provides support so that Local 802 members can perform with the highest artistry and productivity, while minimizing any interruption to their work. This service is provided by Local 802 for its members and their families and is administered and professionally staffed by The Actors Fund. All of MAP’s services are strictly confidential and are free of charge.

• family and financial pressures

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person’s race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, gender identity, and sexual orientation), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information.

It is also illegal to discriminate against a person because the person complained about discrimination, filed a charge of discrimination, or participated in an employment discrimination investigation or lawsuit.

Most employers with at least 15 employees are covered by EEOC laws (20 employees in age discrimination cases). Most labor unions and employment agencies are also covered.

The laws apply to all types of work situations, including hiring, firing, promotions, harassment, training, wages, and benefits.

Anne Walker Scholarship Fund

Anne Walker Scholarship Fund are awarded to members of Local 802 and their children who are pursuing studies in music.

Eligibility:

• you must be a Local 802 member in good standing or the child of a member in good standing
• you must currently be a senior in high school who will attend an institution of higher learning to complete a degree in music or a related field
• OR any current student at an institution of higher learning who is pursuing an undergraduate degree in music or a related field.

Applications must be postmarked no later than May 1. The amount of the awards depend upon the number of grants awarded. (Historically, each award has been in the range of $500 to $1,000.)

The American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (AFM) has been recognized by both United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) as an authorized petitioner for temporary work permits on behalf of AFM member musicians.

Canadian members who wish to work in the United States may be eligible for a ‘Class P2’ non-immigrant work permit, and United States members who wish to work in Canada may be eligible for an ‘IMM-1102’ Permit.

Negotiated Agreements

Negotiated agreements between musicians and their employers, usually known as Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs), are invaluable in providing musicians with fair wages, benefits, job security and a voice in the workplace. The AFM is committed to organizing musicians to achieve union recognition and work under CBAs.

AFM Special Payment Funds

The Sound Recording Special Payments Fund (SRSPF) provides yearly payments to musicians, based on a share of recording industry profits. Musicians employed under the Sound Recording Labor Act (SRLA) qualify for these residual wages. More information is available here.

The Film Musicians Secondary Markets Fund collects residual wage payments on AFM covered motion pictures or Television Films as a result of the exhibition of those motion pictures (including television films) in ancillary markets such as DVD, videocassettes, pay TV, etc., and distributes those payments annually to the musicians who perform on those pictures.

Lester Petrillo Fund for Disabled AFM Musicians

The Lester Petrillo Fund is a charitable trust fund that provides modest financial assistance to disabled members. To apply, contact your Local.

UPDATE: Recent Changes to Border-crossing

Beginning in May 2013, U.S. Customs and Border Protection will no longer issue paper I-94 cards at air and sea ports of entry. Instead, the traveler’s passport will be stamped with their Date of Entry, their visa classification and their Date of Exit (the date by which they must depart the United States). The I-94 information can then be accessed through an online portal and printed out.
Paper I-94 cards will still be issued at land ports of entry.

U.S. Foreign Entertainers with Previous Criminal Activity

Entry/Performance in Canada
If it has been less than five years since a charge or conviction, persons will be deemed “criminally inadmissible” to Canada and a Temporary Resident Permit is required instead of filing for a work permit (LMO).

If the person has been:
Charged but not convicted: Temporary Resident Permit is NOT required.
Charged & Awaiting Trial – or – Warrant for Arrest: Temporary
Resident Permit is required, but may not be granted until AFTER the conclusion of the trial.
On Parole: Five years after the completion of the parole period, the person may apply for Rehabilitation (explained further below).

If the offence committed was DUI in most situations, especially when a minimum of five years has not elapsed, persons are not deemed admissible, meaning a Temporary Resident Permit is required. To be certain, especially when there has been more than one DUI charge or if the accident was very serious (i.e. causing severe injury/death) a Canadian Consulate should be contacted as early as possible to ensure the Temporary Resident Permit is not necessary.

Musicians crossing the border with instruments and gear are encouraged to apply for an ATA Carnet, a document which enables professionals to bring the tools of their trade across borders easily and without hassle, duties or border fees.

Consultation Letters For U.S. Visas

Q. What is a consultation letter, and why do I need one?

A. The USCIS asks that you include a letter from an appropriate peer group or union (in this case the American Federation of Musicians) to establish that the artist or group who is traveling to this country meets the standard of being Internationally Renowned (in the case of O-1B and P-1B Visas) or Culturally Unique (in the case of P-3 Visas). P-2 Visas are issued for artists and entertainers performing under a reciprocal exchange program–for example, Canadian musicians coming to perform in the U.S.

Note: Our letter is based on the evidence and information supplied in your petition package. Letters will only be issued after reviewing your completed petition just before you send it to USCIS.

Q. Does the AFM issue consultations for any cultural artist or group?

A. No—the AFM issues consultations on behalf of artists and groups in which instrumentalists make up least 50% of the personnel. Consultation letters for artists such as dancers, actors, stage managers, stage technicians, operatic singers, and writers are issued by other unions.

Q. Which Visa should I apply for—an O-1B, P-1B, P-2 or P-3?

A. An O-1B Visa is for an individual artist of International Renown; that is, well known outside his or her home country. A P-1B is for a group that meets the same standard. P-2 Visas are issued for Canadian artists/musicians entering the U.S. If you need assistance with a P-2 Visa, please contact our Canadian Office at 416.391.5161. P-3 Visas are for groups which are Culturally Unique—for example, musicians who perform folk music of their home country.

Q. What information do I need to provide in order to receive a letter from the AFM?

A. We need the following information in order to issue a letter of consultation: A cover letter explaining who the musicians are, where they are from, and what qualifies them as Culturally Unique or Internationally Renowned.

• A short questionnaire must be filled out and included with your cover letter.
• For P-1 and P-3 visa requests please include a list of each musician and what instrument(s) they will play.
• For P-1 Visa requests also include the length of time each member has been with the P-1 Group.
• A copy of the USCIS form I-129.
• Copies of any written contracts between the petitioner and the alien beneficiary, including what wages will be earned; or, if there is no written contract, a summary of the terms of the oral agreement under which the alien(s) will be employed.
• A copy of the itinerary.
• Support materials such as reviews, CD covers, programs, etc. which establishes the group or instrumental artist.
• Please note: Support materials must feature the instrumentalists—information on singers/actors/dancers only is NOT sufficient.
• Your fax and telephone number.

Q. Ok. I don’t have an I-129 form—can you send that to me?

A. No—the AFM provides the consultation letter required by the USCIS but does not supply USCIS forms. If you have questions about the USCIS application process, you can access the USCIS on the web at: http://uscis.gov/graphics/index.htm.

Q. Does the AFM charge a fee for this service?

A. The AFM charges an administrative processing fee of $250.00 for each
“P-1B,” P-3,” and “O” consultation letter (please consult the Canadian office for fee information regarding “P-2” consultations).

• The normal processing time for a non-expedited request is 5 to 10 business days.
• For those wishing for a response within 2 business days (expedited service), the fee is $350.00 per consultation letter.
• Corporate or cashiers’ checks or money orders should be made out to: AFM Immigration Processing.
• We cannot accept personal checks for this fee.

The American Federation of Musicians of the United States (AFM) and Canada (CFM) has been recognized by both United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (U.S.C.I.S) and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (C.I.C) as an authorized petitioner for temporary work permits on behalf of AFM member musicians.

Canadian members who wish to work in the United States may be eligible for a ‘Class P2’ non-immigrant work permit, and United States members who wish to work in Canada may be eligible for an ‘IMM-1102’ Permit.

Flying With Your Instrument

Airlines are required to allow musicians to carry on instruments if there is room on the flight and instruments fit safely in overhead compartments or under seats.

• Board your flight as early as possible (overhead compartments are assigned on a first come basis).
• Once an instrument is stowed in-cabin, it cannot be removed or be replaced by other passengers’ items.
• The reverse is also true—airlines are not required to remove other passengers’ items to make room for your instrument.
• In Canada, each airline is currently responsible for its own policy on instruments. AFM is working with the Canadian government to update the Passenger Bill of Rights to make it easier for musicians traveling with instruments. In the meantime, please refer to the CATSA Factsheet.

Carry On Your Larger Instrument

For instruments too large for overhead compartments, you may be able to carry on these instruments if you book a seat as “seat baggage” or “cargo in passenger cabin.”

• Airlines are not required to allow you to book a seat for your large instrument, but some airlines will permit you to do so for a fee. Fess can be equal to the cost of your ticket.

Problems At The Airport

You do have a right to carry on your instrument if there is room and it fits safely, but staff are primarily concerned with safety and security—not your instrument.

If you encounter any issues:

• Calmly state and show the federal regulation here and your airline’s policy for carrying on musical instruments.
• Links to the major airlines are above.
• Suggest placing the instrument in the rear of the aircraft or securing the instrument with cords provided by the airline.
• If necessary, immediately ask to deplane so that you can resolve this matter.
• Remember that you have approximately 15 minutes to resolve this issue before the plane backs away from the gate.

The DOT will most likely not respond to you, but it is critical that they are made aware of incidents so they may hold airlines accountable and possibly enhance regulations in the future.

Touring Shows & Touring Acts

Are you touring or using a booking agent? Do you need a letter of no objection for a visa application? AFM negotiates, administers, and enforces contract agreements for musicians touring with theatrical musicals such as “Book of Mormon,” “Wicked,” “The Lion King,” and “Phantom of the Opera.”

AFM negotiates contracts for the musicians who back up performers such as Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond and for the musicians who perform with Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circuses.

As the appropriate labor union for musicians, USCIS requires that you submit a letter of consultation from the AFM.

The AFM letter is based on all the evidence and information that you supply to us when your petition package is complete and ready to be sent to the USCIS service center.

We have issued our letters to such foreign musical groups such as “U2” from Ireland, “Bjork” from Scandinavia, and the Berlin Philharmonic when they come to perform in the United States.

US Census 2020 – Recruiting Temporary Workers

Hundreds of Thousands of Workers Needed

In the spring of 2020, the Census Bureau will launch a Census field operation, known as Nonresponse Follow-up. Census Takers will knock on doors to follow up with households who have not responded to the census questionnaire.

Both Field and Office Positions Available

The office positions, which are more limited, will be located in area census offices. The role of these offices is to recruit, select, hire, train, manage, and pay all office and field staff who work within the designated boundaries of the geographic territory assigned to the office.
