Volume 122, No. 5May, 2022
Zaharis Kalaitzis, 69, died on Jan. 15, 2022 after being a member of Local 802 since 1995. He was born in Patmos, Greece, and enjoyed a career in New York City playing in Greek clubs and at Greek events. He also performed with Joni Mitchell, played and recorded with many Greek artists such as Mikis Theodorakis and Aggelos Exaggelos, and played with the band Magges at dance clubs on the lower east side. Mr. Kalaitzis was a member of a musical family: his wife Kim Laskowski-Kalaitzis serves as the associate principal bassoonist with the New York Philharmonic and his son Theo is a percussionist and timpanist; both are members of Local 802. Mr. Kalaitzis is survived by his wife Kim, brother Dimitris, children Lana and Theo (and their spouses Tino and Ashlyn) and grandson Myron. A memorial will be held at Riverside Church in the South Hall on May 1, 2022, at 4pm (masks, proof of vaccine and/or negative Covid PCR test required). The family suggests donations to the Local 802 Emergency Relief Fund (click here).
