I joined Local 802 a few years ago in order to sub for the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular. I had just moved back to New York after playing with New World Symphony, and the Christmas Spectacular was one of my first gigs back in the city. At the moment, I love subbing with a lot of different ensembles. I spent a week playing “Tosca” with the New York City Opera, then went right into rehearsal with ICE on some incredible music by Ashley Fure that employs a wide range of extended techniques and contains very little pitch. I know that eventually I will probably want a more reliable schedule, but for now I’m enjoying the diversity of the New York freelance scene. I am primarily a violist, but have been playing more and more violin recently.
