‘Why we joined the union’

Volume 117, No. 12December, 2017

Michael A. Ferrara

Since relocating to New York City two years ago, after completing my master’s degree from Bard College, I have begun pursing a career as a conductor, music director and pianist. I joined Local 802 because I had been contracted to play piano and celeste for a performance of “Carmina Burana” this past summer at the Washington Square Park Music Festival. Most recently, I music directed and orchestrated the Off Broadway production of “The Death of the Moon” at the Jerry Orbach Theater. Moving to NYC has allowed me to pursue a career that is diverse and multi-faceted. Whether I am (hopefully) working on Broadway, or with a symphonic orchestra, summer opera festival or community ensemble, my goal is to be the best and most honest artist I can be. Living in NYC has allowed me to see that that is where art lives – in our relationships and collaborations. Local 802 has introduced me to a vibrant community of artists. For that, I am forever grateful. I am excited to see where this path will lead.
