‘Why we joined the union’
Volume 117, No. 11November, 2017
As a pianist/conductor who splits time between Chicago and New York, it just made sense for me to join Local 802. My pursuits are broad, but the union is always a relevant part of my scene. And it’s a connection to my late father as well, who was a proud union member of the IBEW in the midst of lots of anti-union sentiment where I grew up. Whether conducting the “Jersey Boys” national tour, arranging and music-directing concerts for PBS, or playing jazz clubs and festivals – recently Dizzy’s at Lincoln Center with saxophonist Victor Goines, and the Chicago Jazz Festival with my own quartet – the support and information the union provides is invaluable. I’m always in search of new creative opportunities, new connections and new music to make, wherever it may take me, and I’m grateful to have a partner in the AFM.
