MEMBER INTERVIEW: MARTY TUNG
Volume 125, No. 2February, 2025
MEET OUR NEW MEMBERS! Today, say hello to Marty Tung (@m_tungsten), who tells us, “I joined Local 802 because I’m interested in gaining access to gigs and union resources, developing relationships with more people, and eventually becoming a resource myself for fellow musicians.”
Marty adds, “I’m excited to be part of an organization that will protect my rights as a musician, expand my performance opportunities, and help me meet like-minded people. I think unions promote a collegial atmosphere where personal networks are strengthened and resources are distributed to those that need them, and I’m looking forward to being a part of that space.”
A Chicago native, Marty communicates an enduring passion for music and the bassoon through chamber, solo, and orchestral activities.
They moved to New York City in 2024 and currently serve as the bassoonist for @carnegiehall‘s two-year fellowship program @ensemble.connect. As part of their fellowship with Ensemble Connect, Marty teaches third through fifth grade weekly at P.S. 130 in Brooklyn, performs concerts at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall and @juilliardschool‘s Paul Hall, gives interactive performances at various NYC venues such as schools and community centers, and enjoys residencies at @skidmorecollege and the @pocanticocenter.
When they’re not fulfilling responsibilities for the fellowship, they play with various groups in the New York area like the Fort Greene Orchestra (@fortgreene.live) and participate in educational programming with #LinkUp and the #LUXSymphonyOrchestra.
Marty strives to both advocate for contemporary music and center the works of composers from underrepresented groups, and they hope to start entrepreneurship projects commissioning previously marginalized composers to create bassoon and wind chamber music.
Marty tells us, “I would love to get more involved with contemporary music performance and Broadway. I feel that music is one of the most direct forms of communication and storytelling, and that through music it’s possible to share otherwise inaccessible inner worlds with others.”
Welcome to Local 802, Marty!
