MEMBER INTERVIEW: LIZ ROSA

Volume 125, No. 2February, 2025

MEET OUR NEW MEMBERS! Today, say hello to Liz Rosa (@lizrosabassoon), who joined Local 802 when she moved to NYC in 2023.

“After being a public school music teacher at the start of my career, I have firsthand experience in the strength of a union,” she tells us. “It is important now more than ever that musicians remain united. Unions are incredibly invaluable!”

Brought up as a self-described “band nerd,” Liz strives to bridge the worlds of classical instruments and popular music, creating a fun and engaging experience for modern audiences through performance and writing.

Known for her sense of humor, creative performances and unusually entertaining arrangements and compositions, Liz maintains a busy schedule as a multi-instrumentalist, teaching artist, and composer/arranger.

She’s currently the principal bassoonist of the @easternwindsymphony and the @newbrunswickchamberorchestra, and often performs as a jazz bassoonist and vocalist in NYC.

Liz has performed in the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands, and her arrangements and compositions have been heard across the United States and Britain.

She earned a master’s in music and music education at @teacherscollege (@columbia) and a bachelor’s in bassoon performance and music education at @eastman.school. Her main instructors were Roger Nye, George Sakakeeny and John Hunt.

Liz has been a part of numerous commissions for solo bassoon and wind quintet. She’s also a composer (both for concert works and films), but her favorite collaborators are comedians.

She’s provided music for stand-up shows, sketch comedy and TikTok. Her arrangement of the theme song from @latenightseth was featured on @nbc.

Liz says, “Music has always been at the heart of my existence. I came from a family of talented musicians who always encouraged and inspired me to be my best and pursue what I love. My music teachers were some of the most influential people in my upbringing, helping me become who I am, and if it weren’t for music I would have never met the incredible friends and collaborators I know and love today.”

Welcome to Local 802, Liz!
