Justice for Jazz Artists coordinated another successful event on Nov. 6 at St. Peter’s Church. The “Battle of the Saxes” was designed to raise awareness around the challenges faced by older jazz musicians. The concert featured instrumental soloists Patience Higgins and Bill Saxton, with vocals by Keisha St. Joan and Bob Stewart, and comedy by Dotti Fox. NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Owens gave a rousing talk on the issues facing jazz artists who work in New York City nightclubs, and vocalist/activist Maluwa spoke about the need for generosity, courage and hope when faced with intransigence and apathy. Also appearing were musicians Steve Elmer (piano), Marcus McLaurine (bass), and George Gray (drums).
