A tribute to Jack Cole Hochman

Volume 125, No. 3March, 2025

Jack Cole Hochman, died on Feb. 15, 2024, a few days after his 97th birthday. He had been a Local 802 member since 1944.

Born on Feb. 12, 1927 in Coney Island, Jack was a self-made man who served in the Coast Guard and loved music in all its forms, especially jazz. He played saxophone, clarinet and bass and led his own band, the Jack Cole Orchestra. But he was so much more than a professional musician. Over 60 years’ time, he built a successful catering business with his family.  He owned and ran four catering halls, which were hosted at Seaview Jewish Center, Manhattan Beach Jewish Center, Temple Beth El of Cedarhurst and Temple Beth Torah of Melville.

He also appreciated the finer things in life. He owned horses and enjoyed going to the track with his buddies and watching his own horses race. He loved wearing tuxedos and attending high-society parties. He also was fond of playing blackjack.

Jack shared his love of life with others. He left this world after a life filled with music, laughter and the love of his family. He was married and devoted to his wife Paula for 65 years, and lived his life enjoying every minute with friends and family up to his passing.

He is remembered with adoration by his daughter Gayle, his son Ira, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren — the youngest of whom is Joelle Cole, named after him.

Jack left a legacy of dedication to family, enjoying life, and creating memorable moments for his family and others.  He will be thoroughly missed.

Tribute submitted by Mr. Hochman’s daughter Gayle.
