Irio O’Farrill, 65, a bass player and a member of Local 802 since 1987, died on May 31, 2024.

Mr. O’Farrill was a veteran of NYC’s Latin jazz scene, where he performed with Juan Carlos Formell, Bobby Sanabria and Ascención, Ray Mantilla, the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, Daniel Ponce, the Bronx Horns, and the Latin Jazz Coalition. He also worked with Gloria Gaynor, Bill Warfield’s Hell’s Kitchen Funk Orchestra, the Real Deal Big Band, and on concert tours featuring Larry Gatlin, BeBe Winans, Sarah Brightman and Laurie Beechman.

He performed on numerous Broadway shows, both as a chairholder and as a sub. His Broadway credits included two big award winners — “In The Heights” (which won both a Tony and a Grammy) and “Once On This Island” (which won a Tony for Best Musical Revival). He also played on “The Rocky Horror Show,” “Brooklyn The Musical” and “The Wedding Singer,” served as the in-house contractor on several Broadway and Off Broadway shows, and was the music coordinator/contractor for the Off Broadway show “Kingdom.”

Mr. O’Farrill also performed in two separate jazz trios, each containing a legendary drummer — one with Chester Thompson and one with Gregg Bissonette.

Mr. O’Farrill was a faculty member of the Collective School of Music, the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and the Stevens Institute of Technology, and he also worked as a teaching artist for the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. He co-authored “Afro-Caribbean & Brazilian Rhythms for the Bass,” wrote the Musicians Institute’s “Bass Technique” Digital Book Series Volumes 1 to 4, and contributed to the book “Funkifying the Clave,” by Lincoln Goines and Robbie Ameen.

Mr. O’Farrill is survived by his mother Bertha, his brothers Hector and Robert, and many other loving family and friends.
