Four are Awarded Anne Walker Scholarships

Volume CIII, No. 10October, 2003

The Anne Walker Scholarship Fund has awarded four scholarships for the coming academic year, to help 802 members or their children pursue studies in music.

Wynne Bennett is the daughter of 802 member Ron Bennett. She just finished her first year at Mannes where she studies composition with David Tcimpidis. She studies classical theory and also plays keyboards in funk and jazz ensembles in various clubs around the city. She has presented her music personally to composers Joan Tower and Phillip Glass. This summer, the St. Luke’s Orchestra performed her string quartet and the New York Youth Symphony performed one of her chamber music pieces.

Joseph Fiedler is a trombonist who plans to earn a graduate degree in music. He has performed for over 18 years as a professional musician, including performances or recordings with Lee Konitz, Kenny Wheeler, Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton, the Mingus Big Band, Wynton Marsalis, Lionel Hampton and Tito Puente. He played with the late salsa singer and bandleader Celia Cruz. He plans to use school as a way to focus on his own playing as well as become qualified to teach at the college level.

Mary Sutherland is a harpist who is pursuing an undergraduate music degree at Cornell. She studies harp with Grace Wong, the principal harpist of the Rochester Philharmonic. In addition, she is a member of the Cornell Chamber Orchestra and also performs with Ensemble X, with whom she recorded this year. She is a Presidential Research Scholar, which allows her to assist Cornell professor Annette Richards with her research in 18th century keyboards.

Jenna Troiano is the daughter of 802 member William Troiano. She plans to study music at Ithaca College in the fall. She began studying French horn at the age of nine and was exposed to live concerts all throughout her childhood. She played with various ensembles throughout high school and as a senior played with the All-State Wind Ensemble. She is currently president of the Sachem High School chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

This is the fifth year that the scholarship fund – formed to honor the late Anne Walker, a longtime member of the 802 staff and a tireless advocate for musicians – has awarded grants. For more information on the fund, call the Recording Vice-President’s office at ext. 110.
