A tribute to Donald MacCourt

Donald MacCourt, 90, a bassoonist and a member of Local 802 since 1957, died on Jan. 6, 2025. Mr. MacCourt played principal bassoon in the New York City Ballet Orchestra for more than four decades. He served as the bassoonist of the New York Woodwind Quintet (1973-2005) and as a member of Speculum Musicae. Mr. MacCourt also played heckelphone for the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society. Throughout his career, Mr. MacCourt was heavily involved in the performance and recording of chamber music, especially contemporary chamber music. He can be heard on recordings with the New York Woodwind Quintet, Speculum Musicae, the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, and the Group for Contemporary Music. Mr. MacCourt served on the faculties of the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College and also at Juilliard until his retirement. He was also on the faculty of the Tanglewood Music Center from 1985 to 1997.  He earned a B.A. from San Francisco State College and a master’s in music from the Manhattan School of Music.
