Out of the Pit

Times Square concert series comes to a close - but keep your eyes open to apply for 2018

Volume 117, No. 10October, 2017

The Times Square concert series came to a close with final performances ending on Sept. 29. Local 802 and the Times Square Alliance’s music series “Broadway Buskers: Out of the Pit” spotlighted nearly 50 different Broadway musicians during the successful test run of the new outdoor music program.

From April through September, Broadway musicians braved spring’s cold and rain, summer’s heat and humidity, and autumn’s windy days to perform in Times Square’s new pedestrian plazas. The concert season also brought quite a few rescheduled performances due to weather cancellations. But participants took the outdoor conditions in stride, signing up for alternate dates and hoping for sunshine. As Allegro went to press, the last two weeks of September were awaiting final bookings, but are anticipated to include the following musicians: Caitlin Warebelow, fiddle (“Come From Away”) and Chris Ranney, accordion (“Come From Away”); Saadi Zain, bass (“Lion King”) and Greg Skaff, guitar (“Wicked”); Suzy Perelman, violin (“Cats”); as well as others. As the first season of outdoor music winds down, we begin to look towards expanding our partnership with the Times Square Alliance for next spring, with hopes to include new opportunities for a wider variety of musicians and musical performances beginning in April 2018.
